Classical masterpiece “Swan Lake” was performed by Shanghai Ballet at Shanghai City Theatre recently.

The story is from a German fairy tale. Once upon a time, Princess Odette was turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer. One day when Prince Siegfried was hunting at the lake, Odette, Queen of the Swans, appeared and captivated Siegfried with her beauty. At last, the evil spell was destroyed by the power of Siegfried and Odette's love. As the dawn of a new day rose, they were united in eternal love.

During the performance, swans brought an air of purity, elegance and romance with stunning ballet techniques. The performance was met with rapturous applause from the audience.

“I love the black swan most. Because her dance is so wonderful. Her mid-air leap and her lissom dance show the vivid characteristics of the swan,” said Tang Shuruo, an audience member.

Another said the dancers were absolutely amazing and It was her first time seeing a Chinese production which was really nice.

Swan Lake has won endless accolades in the world ballet scene since 1895. Shanghai Ballet invited Derek Deane, former artistic director at English National Ballet, as choreographer for this performance. He put together an ocean of swans unprecedented in the ballet world.

Some audiences came to watch the Swan Lake to enjoy the charm of Shanghai-style ballet.

“In the past, we watched other versions of Swan Lake. This is performed by Shanghai Ballet that is our local troupe. So it is necessary to learn it with my daughter,” said Ms Tang.

Mr Tang said:“I have seen the changes. There are 24 swans in English version. And there are 48 swans in Chinese version. I also find some innovations. It shows all rivers run into sea and can take other versions' essence. I came here with my children and benefited a lot. We like Shanghai-style's new swans.”
